Story

‘The Dreamer - Becoming Karen Blixen’ is a six-part series inspired by the life and letters of the world-famous writer and icon Karen Blixen.

The story is set in the 1930s, when Karen returns to Denmark after many years in East Africa - bankrupt, sick, and divorced. Her lover has passed away and all her dreams are crushed. Karen reluctantly moves in with her mother at her childhood home.

‘The Dreamer - Becoming Karen Blixen’ is the touching story of Karen’s fight to rise again, and to pursue her overriding dream of breaking through as the incomparable artist she is deep down. At the same time, we follow her struggle for financial freedom, her showdown with her upper-class family and her efforts to overcome illness, despair and loss. The series includes flashbacks from Karen's life in East Africa, as well as fragments from her famous short story 'The Dreamers'.

From Connie Nielsen to Karen Blixen. Growing up in peaceful Elling, Denmark, Danish export Connie Nielsen, already started acting as a teenager alongside her mother in the local variety scene. To pursue her acting career more seriously, she left her home country as an 18-year-old and moved to France. After roles in Italian and French cinema, Connie made her move to the US, where she debuted with her first English language movie “Voyage”. Success came quickly for the Danish star, and with her award-winning roles in ‘Gladiator’, the ‘Wonder Woman’ franchise, and ‘Demonlover’ she became one of the most well-known faces on the theatre screens, especially in male-skewed action cinema. With the ambition to broaden the perspective and shift attention to complex female characters, the fascination with the character of Karen Blixen became a new and magnificent chapter for Connie.
